White bazin riche
White bazin riche, the elegance of great ceremonies
FCFA 6,000 per metre
Width: 150 cm
Bazin riche is a damask cotton woven with tone-on-tone patterns, then dyed, beaten and starched to give it its characteristic stiffness and sheen. It is emblematic of Mali, Senegal and West Africa more broadly, where the craft of bazin dyers and beaters is highly regarded.
Bazin is the cloth of big days: weddings, naming ceremonies, religious festivals and receptions. In Cameroon it is worn as an embroidered grand boubou, a tunic and trouser set or a kaba, and white is especially valued for its solemnity and freshness.
100% damask cotton, 150 cm wide. A good-weight, firm fabric with a soft sheen and woven patterns that catch the light.
More structured than ordinary cotton but still breathable; its generous volumes let air circulate, so it stays bearable even in strong heat.

Frequently asked questions
Does white bazin yellow over time?
It can yellow if stored unwashed or left in the sun for long periods. Wash it after each wear, dry it in the shade and store it in a cotton garment bag.
Does bazin lose its stiffness in the wash?
Yes, the starch softens with washing, which is normal. A little spray starch when ironing brings back the sheen and crispness.
Can I combine it with another fabric?
Yes, part by part when the style allows it: for example an ndop or kente vest on the Foumban set, with the tunic and trousers in white bazin.
