Embroidered black toghu
Embroidered black toghu, the pride of Cameroon's North-West
FCFA 15,000 per metre
Width: 112 cm
Toghu is a black velvet decorated with vivid embroidery, often in red, yellow, orange and white. It is the traditional ceremonial attire of Cameroon's North-West region, linked to the kingdoms and chiefdoms of the Grassfields.
Once reserved for kings, notables and major ceremonies, toghu is now worn throughout Cameroon at weddings, cultural festivals, graduations and national holidays. Wearing it shows a strong attachment to Grassfields culture.
Hand-embroidered velvet, 112 cm wide. A thick, soft fabric with a deep pile, and the embroidery adds texture and weight.
Soft to the touch but warm: this is ceremonial wear, more comfortable in air-conditioned halls or in the evening than in Douala's midday sun.

Frequently asked questions
How do I care for a toghu?
Dry clean only. Embroidered velvet can't take the washing machine or soaking; steam out creases and store it on a broad hanger.
Is toghu warm to wear in Douala?
Yes, it is a thick velvet. It is ideal for indoor ceremonies and evenings; for a day outdoors, ndop is a cooler alternative.
Can I combine toghu with another fabric?
Yes, part by part when the style allows it: the Toghu set also accepts indigo ndop, for example for the trousers or sleeves.
